Innovative, influential and literate, Reed is credited as being the Godfather of Punk, as well as shifting the emphasis in rock music towards poetic, meaningful lyrics. Covered by over 700 bands (among them R.E.M., U2 and David Bowie), Reed, both solo and with the seminal Velvet Underground, is largely accepted as the avatar of Modern Rock. Reed is the Poet Laureate of New York City, a Chairman of Arts & Letters, an American Master. He has also authored several books, acted in numerous films, staged several plays, and exhibited his photography.
